Easy puzzles feel great. They also teach you nothing

Rovian’s puzzle studio picks chess puzzles by your level and your latest results. Solve everything and it gets harder; keep missing and it eases off.

The puzzle studio is the part of Rovian’s puzzle page that suggests one training goal and builds short 5-puzzle sets at your level. It shows the goal before you solve, checks how you do on the first try and tunes the next set’s difficulty. Since the October 7 update, it’s the first thing on the puzzle page.

Solving ten puzzles in a row at first glance feels good. But those positions only ask what you already know. Learning starts where you struggle a little: where you think twice before moving, and sometimes get it wrong. The studio tries to keep you right there.

What’s on the puzzle studio’s first screen?

The Puzzles page now opens with a single suggestion. The “Today’s focus” card shows you one topic, a sentence explaining why, and a “Start training” button. Below it sits your daily goal: 10 solves across all modes.

Prefer to pick your own topic? “Choose your own topic” opens three tracks: Checkmate, Tactics and Endgames. Each has six topics, from mate in 1 to back rank mate, from forks to deflection, from pawn endgames to zugzwang. Topics with no puzzles in the pool can’t be clicked. If you want to test yourself without knowing the theme, “Mixed training” is here too.

The screen is deliberately simple. The Daily Puzzle, other ways to train and progress details wait in collapsed sections, and the Daily Puzzle board isn’t built until you open it. We covered those modes in our Daily Puzzle and Puzzle Rush and Puzzle Duel posts.

This 36-second video shows the whole puzzle hub: the Puzzle Studio intro, the Daily Puzzle, Personal Puzzles, Puzzle Rush, Puzzle Duel and other ways to train. Usernames, scores and numbers on screen are examples, and there is no voice-over: the on-screen text tells the story.

How is today’s focus chosen?

The suggestion comes from Rovian’s puzzle curriculum and carries one of three reasons.

1. Weakness: a topic you’ve tried at least 3 times but haven’t nailed yet. If your own game analysis found the same kind of mistake, that topic moves further up.

2. Review: a topic you know well comes back before you forget it, after 4 or 14 days depending on how solid it is.

3. Explore: a topic you’ve never tried. Below a 1500 puzzle rating, exploration starts with basics like mate in 1, hanging pieces and forks; above it, with topics like mate in 2, skewers and deflection.

One correct answer isn’t enough to call a topic solid. The system weighs your accuracy by the number of attempts and only fully trusts it after 8. We covered the basics of themes and puzzle rating in this post.

How are chess puzzles picked for your level?

Difficulty starts a little below your puzzle rating: the centre is 100 points under it, because practice isn’t an exam. Your recent results do the real tuning. The system looks at the last 20 different puzzles you faced in that topic’s training and counts first attempts only. A solve that needed a hint or a second try doesn’t count as a success, and re-solving a puzzle you remember doesn’t change the result.

Once a topic has at least 5 examples, the centre shifts like this:

1. 90 percent or more on the first try: up 150 points.

2. 80 to 89 percent: up 75 points.

3. 56 to 79 percent: no change.

4. 41 to 55 percent: down 75 points.

5. 40 percent or less: down 150 points.

So if you solve nearly everything, the studio lifts you above your rating; if you keep getting stuck, it pulls back. A difficulty band forms around the centre. While your rating is still settling, the band reaches 350 points down and up. Once it has settled, the band runs 120 points down and 180 up, a little wider on the harder side. You can see your band and accuracy under “Level and recent performance”.

How is a 5-puzzle set built?

The set fills with the puzzles in your band that sit closest to its middle. Puzzles are grouped into 100-point slices and picked at random within a slice, so every set is close in difficulty yet different. If you train with your account, puzzles you’ve already solved or tried recently stay out. Inside the set, the order runs from easier to harder: the first puzzle warms you up, the last one pushes you.

If the band doesn’t yield enough puzzles, the system widens it by 400 points each way but never drops the topic or the exclusions. With a small pool, a set can be shorter than five; the summary shows the real number.

When you practise checkmates or a single motif, the goal appears before you solve. The “Your goal in this puzzle” line says, for example, mate in 2 or fork. In mixed training, Puzzle Rush and duels, the theme stays hidden.

When the set ends, you see how many puzzles you solved on the first try without hints. At 80 percent or more you’re told you applied the idea well; at 40 percent or less, that the topic deserves more practice. “Next short set” brings fresh puzzles on the same topic and recalculates the difficulty from your latest results.

How is your progress saved?

When you train with your account, every solve is saved, and the next puzzle doesn’t open until saving finishes. If the connection drops, your solution stays on screen and “Save again” resends it; the same attempt is never counted twice. You can solve without signing in too, but then there’s no progress record and no personal tuning.

With the same update, From Rovian Players now only includes positions from games where both sides are registered players. For puzzles made from your own games, see personal puzzles; to get faster by repeating the same set, see the Woodpecker Method.

Start today’s focus

Staying in your comfort zone is easy; the studio nudges you just past it. Open the Puzzles page, press “Start training” and finish 5 puzzles. If you keep getting them all right, the next sets get harder, and that’s a good sign.

Then test the tactic against a real opponent: play live video chess. Open your camera. Make your move.

Frequently asked questions

How do you choose chess puzzles for your level?

Rovian’s puzzle studio centres difficulty 100 points below your puzzle rating. It shifts that centre up or down by up to 150 points based on your last 20 first attempts in the topic, then builds the set from puzzles closest to the middle of that band.

How many puzzles are in a puzzle studio set?

Each set has 5 puzzles, focuses on one topic and has no time pressure. Puzzles within the set run from easier to harder.

Does using a hint during tactics training change anything?

Yes. A puzzle solved with a hint or on a second try doesn’t count as a success for difficulty tuning. The end-of-set summary also shows how many you solved on the first try without hints.

What is the daily puzzle goal?

The daily goal is 10 solves in total across all modes. It’s there to build a steady habit, not to measure mastery.

Will I see the same puzzle again?

When you train with your account, studio sets leave out puzzles you’ve already solved and ones you tried recently. If a topic’s pool runs out of new puzzles, the set comes up short or a screen tells you so plainly.
