Ordu 21 is a free, unrated game at Rovian where you draw cards to build an army without going over 21 points, then use that army to checkmate your opponent on a chessboard. Everyone starts with a king and two pawns; each card adds a pawn, knight, bishop, rook or queen. You learn with a bot first, then play on video. The interface and tutorial are currently in Turkish.
Every blackjack table knows the moment: you’re holding 17 and a small voice says “just one more”. Ordu 21 brings that moment to a chessboard. What you risk here isn’t chips; it’s your rook, maybe your queen. One card drawn at the wrong time can change the game before the first move.
How do you play Ordu 21?
The game has two parts: first you build your army at the card table, then you play on the chessboard. The rules are short:
1. Everyone starts with a king and two pawns. These don’t count toward your points.
2. Each press of “Kart çek” (Draw card) adds a new piece to your army. A pawn is worth 1, a knight 3, a bishop 3, a rook 5 and a queen 9.
3. Your total must not go over 21. Stop whenever you like with “Dur” (Stand); you don’t have to hit exactly 21.
4. Hit exactly 21 or collect 6 cards and your army is ready automatically.
5. When both armies are ready, chess begins. White moves first, and whoever checkmates the opposing king wins.
Both players draw at the same time. Face-down cards show how many cards your opponent has taken, but not which pieces. A 21-square rail on the table fills in by each card’s value, so you can see at a glance how much room you have left.
What happens if you go over 21?
The card that takes you over 21 never joins your army. On top of that, the last card you drew before it leaves your army, and you can’t draw any more. Those are the two cards in the title: the one that busts you and your latest reinforcement. You don’t lose your whole army. Going bust isn’t losing the game either; you take the board with what’s left.
The tutorial shows it well. First a rook (5), then a queen (9): 14 in total. You draw again and get another queen: 23. The new queen goes, and so does the one before it. You take the board with your rook, your king and two pawns.
The odds are simple too, because each draw brings one of the five piece types with equal chance. At 12 or less, no card can push you over 21. From 13 to 16, only a queen busts you: a 20% risk. At 17 or 18, a rook does too: 40%. At 19 or 20, only a pawn is safe: an 80% risk.
How does the game on the board end?
Once both armies are ready, the pieces set themselves up. Your king stands on the e-file and your two starting pawns on d and e; drawn pieces fill the free slots in the order you drew them. Pieces move as in normal chess, but there is no castling, so watch your back rank. A pawn that reaches the last rank promotes to a queen.
1. Checkmate the opposing king and you win.
2. Stalemate, insufficient material, the 50-move rule and threefold repetition end the game in a draw.
3. If both sides make 80 moves without a checkmate, the game is drawn.
4. A player who resigns or leaves the room mid-game loses.
There is no chess clock in Ordu 21. If your connection drops in a video room, you have 60 seconds to come back; otherwise the game goes to your opponent.
Can I learn with a bot first?
Yes, and that’s how Ordu 21 greets you. A tutor bot called Rovi walks you through drawing cards, going over 21 and moving to the board in a 6-step tutorial. The cards in the tutorial are set in advance; in a real game they’re random. You don’t need an account for the tutorial, and your camera and microphone stay off.
After the tutorial, “Botla pratik yap” (Practise with the bot) gives you a full game against Rovi. The cards are random now and the result doesn’t touch your rating. A small tip: Rovi stops once it reaches 16 points. You can skip the tutorial with “Tanıtımı geç” and bring it back any time with “Tanıtımı yeniden göster”.
How do you play a friend on video?
Video rooms need a Rovian account that is signed in, has a completed profile and has passed age verification; guest sign-in can’t join them. Before you enter, you confirm that your camera and microphone will open with your browser’s permission. You can switch either off at any time.
Then there are two ways in. “Arkadaşını davet et” (Invite a friend) creates a private room and gives you an invite link to share. “Rakip bul” (Find an opponent) looks for an opponent for you. If you already have a room code or link, “Odaya katıl” (Join room) takes you straight in. Once you both press “Hazırım” (I’m ready), the cards come out; after the game, “Bir daha oynayalım” (Let’s play again) starts a rematch, and you swap colours. Rooms are temporary; this mode keeps no game history or rating.
The card table has its own sound, too. The deck is shuffled, a card slides across the felt and flips over, and you hear distinct sounds at exactly 21, when you bust and when your army is ready. When the armies reach the board, the pieces land with a soft knock. The sound button on the table turns it all off. You’ll find Ordu 21 in the game lobby under “Rovian Exclusive Chess Modes”, with a “New” badge.
One more card, or stand?
In Ordu 21 the decision is yours twice: first when to stop, then how to play the army you’ve got. Even a small army can win if it’s played well, because the cards decide your luck and your moves decide the game.
