Opening Explorer: What Do Other Players Do in This Position?

The opening explorer in the analysis screen shows how often the board position has been played and how each move scores, using the Lichess database.

The opening explorer looks up the position on your board in an opening database and lists the moves played from it. It sits next to the board in the analysis screen.

The data comes from the Lichess opening database — not from theory books, but from millions of games that were actually played.

What does it show?

Each move comes with three things: how many games were played with it, how often White won, how often Black won, and how many were drawn.

The move you actually played is marked as well, so you can compare “what I did” with “what people do” on one screen.

Why is it useful?

An engine tells you the best move, but human practice is another matter. Some moves look theoretically equal yet make winning far easier; others lead to positions that are very hard to handle correctly.

The explorer exposes that gap. Knowing that “this is the engine's second choice, but humans win 58% with it” is more practical than an evaluation when you're picking a repertoire.

If the position isn't in the database, it says so plainly — that's precisely the move where your game left the book.

How to use it

Open a game from your history, step through the moves and watch the explorer panel. Once you find the point where you left the book, drill it in the opening trainer.

For your own report card, My openings is the complement: the explorer shows the general trend, that page shows your real results.

See you in the next story.
