Queen's Gambit
A classical, solid plan for White: take the center with d4 and c4, trade on d5 and press with the minority attack.
Basics: the first moves of the Queen's Gambit
Take the center with d4, then attack d5 with c4. Whatever Black plays, your goal is the same: central control and quick development.

If Black plays e6 (Queen's Gambit Declined)
Trade on d5 and put your bishop on g5 (on f4 if Black's bishop is already on e7); then e3, bishop d3, queen c2, knight f3 and castle. The plan is the minority attack: rook b1, b4, a4 and b5.

If Black takes on c4 (Queen's Gambit Accepted)
Open your bishop's path with e3, take back c4 with the bishop, knight to f3 and castle. Stop b5 with a4. If Black clings to the pawn with b5, punish it with a4 and queen f3.

Exchange Variation: trade on d5; knight c3, bishop f4, e3 and knight f3 give a simple, symmetrical structure. Press b7 with the queen on b3 and the open c-file with a rook on c1.
