Basics: the first moves of the Caro-Kann
Support d5 with c6. The Caro-Kann secret: your light-squared bishop gets out before you play e6.

If White pushes the pawn to e5 (Advance Variation)
White gains space with e5. Bring your bishop to f5, play e6, then attack the base of the pawn chain, d4, with c5.

Take on e4 and bring the bishop to f5. Against the h-pawn attack make an escape square with h6; trade bishops, then e6, knight f6, bishop e7 and castle.

Recapture with the c-pawn and develop the knights to c6 and f6. In the Panov stay solid with e6 and bishop e7; the isolated d4 pawn is your target.
